What is a Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT)

A low vision therapist assesses the usable vision of a client to determine how best to use the residual vision in their daily lives. They instruct in the use of low vision devices such as handheld illuminated magnifiers, magnification systems, screen readers and accessibility features on assistive technology.

 

What would some job responsibilities be for a CLVT?

Sessions range from evaluating an elementary school student for best practices in a classroom to helping an older adult read their mail with greater ease, this is a dynamic field!

  • Teach a teenager how to use a handheld telescope to see the concert stage
  • Evaluate an office workspace and recommend accessible modifications
  • Assist people to make the most of their remaining vision by adapting lighting conditions and changing color contrast
  • Train individuals in the use of non-optical aids such as a reading stand
  • Introduce a newly blinded veteran to the accessibility features on their tablet

Where can you go to study to become a CLVT?

Obtain a bachelor’s degree in any field, complete coursework in Low Vision Therapy, then pass the ACVREP Low Vision Therapy Certification Exam
